Here's The Advice Auli'i Cravalho Got From Original Ariel, Jodi Benson, For 'The Little Mermaid Live'

Auli’i Cravalho is opening up about the advice she sought out from Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the original animated version of The Little Mermaid.

Speaking with Collider, the 18-year-old actress revealed that she’s become close with Jodi over the past couple years and received some sage advice from the actress in regards to portraying the sea princess for The Little Mermaid Live!

“I met with Jodi, a few months ago, at D23. We had actually met, for the first, at the D23, a few years before that, and she’s always just been such a beautiful, warm individual. She had so much advice to give to all of us Disney princesses because she just knows how it works,” Auli’i shared. “She’s been grateful, every step of the way, and that’s something that she also taught me, a few years ago.”

She continues, “Now that I’m playing Ariel, I asked her, ‘I don’t know how to really make her my own. You played her pretty perfectly, so where do I go from there?’ She was incredibly kind and basically says, just remember that she’s joyous and she has so much love for the ocean and where she comes from, but also she has such a need for adventure and a need to explore. So, with that in mind, I hope to do her proud.”

The Little Mermaid Live! airs TONIGHT, @ 8PM ET/PT on ABC.

Auli'i Cravalho Will Do Aerials On 'The Little Mermaid Live!' Tonight!

Auli’i Cravalho is going to be flying in tonight’s The Little Mermaid Live!

The 18-year-old starlet chatted with USA Today about her favorite tunes from the movie, how she’s been preparing for the role and if she’s heard any word about a Moana sequel. Check it out below!

On wearing the red wig: “About a month ago, I think, I got to try on the wig for the first time, and it was crazy to see myself in the mirror with red hair. Then they put a red kind of dye in my eyebrows. And it made me look like, obviously, a completely different person, but it definitely put me in the headspace of Ariel, and I cannot wait to put on that iconic wig again.”

On getting to do aerials as Ariel: “‘Part of Your World’ is really exciting to me because I get to do some aerial work in that. So Ariel gets to do aerial work, which I think is also the best pun in the world. And I’m really, really excited. I’ve been doing a lot of ab exercises, I’ve been doing a lot of crunches, a lot of planks.

On a Moana sequel: “My lips stay sealed on that, but I’m really excited for whatever Disney’s coming up with.”

The Little Mermaid Live! airs TONIGHT @ 8PM ET/PT on ABC!

Here's How 'The Little Mermaid Live' Event Will Actually Work & Be Broadcast on TV

We’ve only got one more day until the premiere of The Little Mermaid Live!

Starring Auli’i Cravalho, Queen Latifah, John Stamos, Shaggy and Graham Phillips, the magical event will be filled with the original animated movie, plus live performances of all your favorite songs from the soundtrack.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to director Hamish Hamilton about how the broadcast will be done and what fans can expect the event to be like.

“In its most basic explanation, it’s actually quite simple. We will start the animated feature on a giant screen presented in a room. The television audience is almost at a concert where the star is the movie on a screen. Very quickly we’re going to go full frame into the movie so the audience on television are watching the animated feature as they have done a few times if they’re fans,” he explained.

Hamish adds that “the point we get to a song, we will transition from the animated feature back into our room where we will reveal our cast performing the songs. At the end of the song, huge applause, and we transition back into full frame animated feature.”

“It’s about 55 percent of what we’re creating is the animated feature and then about 45 percent of what the TV audience will see are live performances.”

He also spoke about the blending of the live part and animated feature, hoping to make “the blend beautiful. The Hollywood Bowl clearly demonstrates that it can work and it does work, and we’re taking a stage further.”

“We hope that when we present it, people like yourself — well, actually everybody, but particularly people like yourself who love the movie so much will love our take on it.”

The Little Mermaid Live! will premiere Tuesday, November 5th @ 8PM ET/PT on ABC. Check out some behind-the-scenes pics below!
