Jason Rothenberg Gives Status Update On 'The 100' Prequel

The 100‘s series finale just aired and many are surely wondering what’s going on with the prequel!

The show’s creator and showrunner Jason Rothenberg recently gave a bit of an update on the prequel series.

“I wish I had good answers for you. What I can say is in terms of whether or not it’s going to happen is that there are discussions that are still happening at the highest level,” he told Deadline.

“You know, I think probably I’d be talking out of turn if I mentioned where those conversations were happening, unfortunately, but there is a chance, a good chance, I guess, that it could come back. I wish I had news this week, it would be great to announce it this week, I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Jason added.

He was also asked if any of the characters from The 100 would appear in the prequel.

“I don’t think we’ll see the characters from the original show. I mean, again, I would say never just because you don’t know what’s going to happen if you are lucky enough to run for a while,” Jason said. “Eventually, you do tell a story. I do know that one of the things I want to do is get it back up to space because concurrent with the timeline of the prequel, what’s happening in space is all the space stations, that were separate at the time of the nuclear holocaust, are coming together to form the ark.”

“So, up there is where we would meet the great, great, great grandmother and grandfather of all of our heroes, Clarke’s great grandparents, great-great grandparents, Bellamy’s, Octavia’s, obviously, and so we could tell a story that way,” he continued. “Some of the actors have already tried to make the pitch that their great-great grandfathers and grandmothers look exactly like them. I doubt that’s going to happen. We’ll see. But I do know that that is somewhere where I want to take the prequel if we’re lucky enough to get it ordered.”

'The 100' Showrunner Jason Rothenberg Teases Surprise Guests For Series Finale

The 100‘s series finale is airing TONIGHT (September 30)!

The CW show is coming to an end after seven seasons on the air, and showrunner Jason Rothenberg is dishing on the final episode.

“We’re going to try and wrap up as many things as we can,” he told TVLine. “It’s a finale — and it’s a series finale on top of that — so there will be some surprise guests. Fans can have expectations of a certain scope and scale that I feel we’ve always been able to achieve in these finales.”

“This was a difficult season, because we also made a pilot within the season in the middle of everything,” Jason added. “And because we shot the pilot so late in the season, I went right from being on the set of the prequel to prepping the finale… It was definitely a challenge, but I’m glad I did it. I kind of wish I’d done it earlier, so I could have four or five [episodes] under my belt now, but it would have been a regret had I not.”

In tonight’s series finale, “The Last War,” after all the fighting and loss, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) and her friends have reached the final battle. But is humanity worthy of something greater?

Tune in to The 100‘s series finale TONIGHT (September 30) at 8/7c on The CW!

'The 100' Showrunner Talks Tonight's Major, Shocking Death (Spoiler Alert)

There was a major character killed off of The 100 on tonight’s (September 9) episode!

In “Blood Giant,” Clarke (Eliza Taylor) went to the extreme to protect Madi (Lola Flanery), pointed her gun and killed ____ to save her.

WARNING!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Many fans were shocked by the death, and showrunner Jason Rothenberg took to social media to defend the decision.

“For 7 seasons, The 100 has been a show about the dark things that humanity will do to survive and the toll those deeds take on our heroes’ souls,” he wrote. “We knew Bellamy’s death had to go to the heart of what the show was all about: Survival. Who you’re willing to protect. And who you’re willing to sacrifice.”

“His loss is devastating, but his life and his endless love for his people will loom large and affect everything that comes after, to the very end of the series finale itself,” Jason added. “We thank Bob for his beautiful work over these long years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

There are only about a handful of episodes of The 100 left as the series comes to an end after the current season.

The 100's Jason Rothenberg Dishes On The Prequel's Backdoor Pilot

The 100‘s potential prequel series’ backdoor pilot episode is airing tomorrow (July 8)!

Showrunner Jason Rothenberg recently opened up about the episode.

“The original show was always about seeing how far people would go to survive,” he told TV Line. “It was a story of tribalism and showing what people would do to protect the ones they love. In this new show, Callie’s mission statement is: I don’t care who they are, I’m going to save them. She’s a protagonist for our time.”

“There were a bunch of people who were interesting, but there was no one I had fallen in love with,” Jason said about Iola Evans, who plays Callie. “On a flight back home from New York in December, which was getting pretty close to when we had to shoot the episode, I watched her self-tape audition and it was instant. She’s just so talented, and she has no idea how good she is yet, so it was awesome getting to be on set with her [and director Ed Fraiman] and really help her find that performance. I adore her, and whether or not this series gets picked up, that girl is going places.”

Jason also dished about the relationship between Callie and her brother Reese (played by Adain Bradley), and how it’s different than Bellamy and Octavia.

“Bellamy was essentially a surrogate parent to Octavia from the time she was born,” he said. “That relationship started out strong, but it went through some ups and downs and peaks and valleys once the show started. There’s a bit of a Cain and Abel story [with Callie and Reese]. She’s the free-spirited leader traveling her own path, while her brother always craves their father’s approval. Because he never gets it, and Callie does, it creates a bit of a sibling rivalry that becomes very intense.”

Be sure to tune in for the The 100 prequel series’ backdoor pilot TOMORROW (July 8) at 8/7c on The CW!

'The 100' Showrunner Shares How Prequel Backdoor Pilot Affects Final Season

The 100 final season premieres TONIGHT (May 20) and showrunner Jason Rothenberg is dishing on the prequel pilot.

The backdoor pilot for the upcoming possible prequel series will air during the seventh season and it definitely factors into the arc of the season.

“There’s a big story that is unfolding as the season goes along, and then we get to the prequel,” Jason told EW.

“And that story does, I would say, explain and dramatize in a large way how we got here. It is pivotal, for sure, and wonderful. Performances in that are great; I mean, I just can’t say enough about this cast,” he added.

In case you missed it, The CW announced it’s new schedule for the 2020/2021 season, and an update on The 100 prequel series.

'The 100' Creator Opens Up About Getting To End The Show On Their Terms

Jason Rothenberg, the creator of The 100, is dishing some info on the final season of the show!

In a new interview, he opens up about getting to end the show on their own terms, and how it will be their own version of a happy ending.

“I definitely can safely say that we’re trying to say something more with season 7,” Jason told EW. “The ending of a story always is the point of the story, the moral of the story. We have yet to reveal the moral of the story, but it will be revealed in season 7. And it won’t be ‘People are horrible, we all suck, we’re willing to kill everyone and everything and do anything to survive.’ There’s a higher purpose.”

“A happy ending? I’d say that’s probably, well… it’ll be our version of a happy ending, how about that?” he added.

“There were a few seasons in the middle of the run where we didn’t know [the plan for the show],” Jason continued. “We legitimately were on the bubble and were always trying to engineer something that could possibly be a series ender and a season ender, you know? I have for a while known thematically and like you say, in a general way, what I want the ending to be. I knew what I wanted it to feel like, I knew what I wanted it to say. But it was about getting some assurances from the network that I could actually tell the story when I wanted to.”

“To their great benefit since they are putting the quality of the show ahead of making more episodes and making more money, shockingly, it’s a decision that really should be applauded for both the studio and especially Mark Pedowitz and the network side, we finally get to do it,” he said. “It’s much easier knowing. We rolled the dice this year that we were going to get to do it, and fortunately in their wisdom and generosity, they’re letting us do it. Had they said no and wanted a season 8, I was going to be out of here anyway. Getting to end on our terms, it’s a rare thing, and I’m grateful for it for sure.”

In case you missed it, it was announced over the weekend that The 100 would be ending after the show’s seventh season next year.
