Joshua Rush Opens Up About Cyrus Telling Jonah He's Gay on 'Andi Mack'

Andi Mack made more history on last week’s episode and Joshua Rush is opening up about it.

If you missed it, Cyrus officially came out as gay to Asher Angel‘s Jonah Beck during his grandmother’s shiva. It was just another profound moment on the groundbreaking series.

Joshua spoke to GMA about the moment and making television history with Cyrus.

“Taking on the role of Cyrus has been one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in my life,” Josh shared. “Being Jewish, being 14, going to middle school, having this small, close-knit group of friends, and being gay are all just parts of his personality.”

He added that since the episode aired, the reactions have just been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“Over the last few days I’ve really gotten to see the myriad of ways that both this new coming-out scene for Cyrus, and this Jewish representation of his family, has affected the fans.”

He continues, “Cyrus has taught me a lot about being comfortable with myself no matter what others think.”

“I was bullied a lot at Cyrus’ age, so it’s inspiring to see how Cyrus knows he doesn’t have it all figured out yet, but he isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions about who he might be and what that means for him.”

Andi Mack airs Fridays on Disney Channel.

'Andi Mack' To Tackle Gun Safety In Special Episodes This Season

'Andi Mack' To Tackle Gun Safety In Special Episodes This Season

Andi Mack has tackled a lot of important issues over the course of three seasons – but now its’ about to tackle gun safety in two special upcoming episodes.

The two-ep story arc was developed under the consultancy of the child development experts at The Brady Center and Hollywood, Health & Society, a program of the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center.

The episodes include a public service announcement about gun safety, airing Friday, November 16th and November 30th on Disney Channel.

The storyline illustrates peer pressure and a true test of character for Cyrus (Joshua Rush) when T.J. (Luke Mullen) and his group of friends unexpectedly invite Cyrus to join their unsupervised target practice.

VP of Current Series at Disney Channels Worldwide, Kory Lunsford, said that the episode was “inspired by a tragedy that occurred in the family of one of the series writers and, with thoughtful care and expertise, the entire Andi Mack team delivered a story that can provide a means for kids, their families and teachers to open the lines of communication about peer pressure and the dangers of unsupervised guns.”

Creator Terri Minsky added, “Our show is meant to entertain kids, yet we also want to help them make sense of a very complicated world, to make them feel safe and confident to talk to parents and trusted adults about gun safety.”
