The 19-year-old musician joined her boyfriend Tyler Cole in a box for 24 hours on Thursday (March 12) and Friday (March 13) for a performance art piece.
The couple make up the band The Anxiety, who recently dropped their first album of the same name, and their performance piece explored the eight stages of anxiety.
At one point during the 24 hours, Tyler took a clipper to Willow‘s head and shaved off her locks.
“I’m going to need some time to process that experience before I really say anything but I will say thank you so much to everyone who came out to MOCA and watched the live stream. I am truly overwhelmed. There is a lot going on in the world and I think THE ANXIETY reflects how a lot of us feel right now. So hopefully this music and the art we are creating can help you in any way even if it’s just a quick distraction from all of this chaos. @theanxiety debut album out now,” Tyler wrote on Instagram after they were out of the box.
The duo released their debut single “Hey You” on Friday (February 28), along with the official music video.
“Hey you, with your earphones on in your bedroom / And you’re all alone (Hey you!)” Willow Smith sings. “Hey you, on the catwalk / With your high heels on / But you’re sad as f–k (Hey you!)”
Their debut self-titled album, available on March 13, is also available for pre-order.
The Anxiety aims to showcase “the anxiety that both Willow and Tyler endure on a day to day basis and how they cope with it. The Anxiety sonically embodies the meaning of that personal unease, seeking to express the overwhelming feeling of a person on the brink of an attack. Their universal goal for this project is to use their voices to advocate for mental health awareness and help those who specifically suffer from anxiety,” according to a press release.
