Javicia Leslie Says That Stepping Into 'Batwoman' Role Took A Lot of Getting Used To

Just ahead of tonight’s season finale of Batwoman, Javicia Leslie is looking back at her year as the iconic superhero.

If you recall, the 34-year-old actress took over the title role at the beginning of season two from Ruby Rose and is opening up about how the role changed a bit when she stepped in.

Speaking with E! News, Javicia opened up about joining the series and coming into a cast who were already familiar with each other, and about the weight of the role as a whole.

“We don’t look at it from that perspective as artists. We come in and do the job. What effect it makes is amazing, but for me, it’s really about focusing on the work itself. I didn’t go into the show thinking about the history-making part of it, because I don’t know if I would have succeeded,” she says.

As for fitting in with the cast, she shared that “it wasn’t difficult at all. Everyone was very welcoming and warm and it’s been a really beautiful season of being able to work with this amazing cast and crew. I feel like going into next season, it’s just going to flow so smoothly.”

Javicia also talked about becoming Ryan, who came into the role following Kate Kane’s accident in the season one finale.

“I completely understood Ryan the moment I read her,” she shared. “The moment I entered my Ryan life, I was able to truly understand what was needed of me. The part that was foreign to me was the Batwoman part, and it was OK that that was foreign to me, because it was foreign to Ryan. I was learning to become a superhero while Ryan was learning to become a superhero, and so we both had this journey to go on.”

She does admit that “the Batwoman of it all took a lot of getting used to. No one tells you how to stand or talk or anything!”

Now thought, Javicia says that her Batwoman feels totally natural, and she’s figured out how to take some ownership of the iconic character.

“This is Ryan’s Batwoman, and that can never be changed,” she said. “So because of that, it feels completely natural, because being Ryan feels natural.”

Batwoman airs Sunday @ 9/8c on The CW.
