Maia Mitchell Explains the Weirdest Thing About Playing Callie on 'Good Trouble'

Maia Mitchell Explains the Weirdest Thing About Playing Callie on 'Good Trouble'

Maia Mitchell is growing up right along with her Fosters character, Callie Adams Foster.

In her Fosters spin-off, Good Trouble, Maia has to play a different version of Callie, who is now a power suit-wearing law clerk.

Maia loves how Callie has grown, but in an interview with InStyle, she revealed the one thing about Callie’s changes that did feel weird for her.

“I felt so weird about [my first power suit fitting] because I look so young,” she said, comparing the process to feeling like trying on a Halloween costume. “But I love those power suits. I love being able to just kind of stroll into a judge’s office [as Callie], wearing a power suit and six-inch stilettos, and give them piece of my mind.”

When it comes to her own style, Maia likes to keep it casual.

“I have too many pairs of jeans,” she said. “That’s pretty much my uniform — jeans and a tank. The older I get, the more girly I get, and the more I appreciate pinks, and ruffles, and that kind of thing.”

Maia Mitchell Talks Taking on "Deeper" Grown Up Roles After Disney

Maia Mitchell Talks Taking on

Maia Mitchell is all grown up.

The 25-year-old actress got her start on Disney Channel when she catapulted to fame with her starring role as McKenzie in the Teen Beach Movie franchise. Now, in a new interview with InStyle, Maia opened up about leaving her Disney days behind in favor of more adult roles.

Specifically, she discussed taking her Fosters character, Callie, to new places in her spin-off, Good Trouble.

“I definitely, since my Disney days, have made an effort to delve a little deeper,” Maia said. “Good Trouble was another really good opportunity to do that. It was a character that I know really well, but put in a different light. It’s a little more sophisticated, which was exciting. Some of the themes are…I don’t know if they’re dark, but they’re definitely more serious.”

Maia isn’t just growing up on screen though. The actress also talked about what getting older has meant for her in her real life.

“25 has been a really interesting year for me,” she said. “I think it’s when you stop being able to excuse yourself from certain patterns of behavior. And, at least for me, it’s when I’ve really had to question certain decisions I’ve made.”

Callie & Mariana's Relationship Might Have More Tension in Season Two on 'Good Trouble'

Callie & Mariana's Relationship Might Have More Tension in Season Two on 'Good Trouble'

Callie encourages Mariana to get up for the day with a little nudge in this still from tonight’s Good Trouble season two premiere.

The ep picks up right where we left off in the season one finale, and the outcome of the Jamal Thompson case is decided.

Cierra Ramirez spoke to EW about the season ahead and revealed that there will be tension between sisters Callie and Mariana.

“I think living with a roommate, regardless of who it is, there comes a time when you butt heads, especially when it’s your sister and they live in such close proximity to each other,” she shared. “One thing I loved is the fact that although it’s a different space, the beds are set up in the exact same layout as it was way in The Fosters.”

She adds, “It’s super cute, but that being said, they’ve gone off to college, they’ve had their own spaces and now they’re back to square one. That definitely is going to put some tension on them. Mariana can feel very left out of Callie’s life and feel like she’s not a priority so they’re definitely going to run into some roadblocks this season, one hundred percent.”

Good Trouble premieres TONIGHT, June 18th @ 8PM ET/PT on Freeform.

Cierra Ramirez Talks Upcoming 'Good Trouble' Relationships

Cierra Ramirez Talks Upcoming 'Good Trouble' Relationships

Cierra Ramirez is opening up about Mariana’s relationships in season two of Good Trouble.

The 24-year-old actress dished about her character’s burgeoning romance with Raj and what’s going on with her boss Evan.

“I definitely think it’s going to complicate things, just because of everything she’s been fighting for, as far as changing the culture at Speckulate,” she told TV Line about the romance with Raj. “You can’t help who you love, of course, but I think with the Fight Club girls, it might not fly — or maybe not even with the whole company in general, just because she’s been fighting this patriarchy, trying to have equal rights. It’s going to get her into some trouble, you’ll see.”

“I think it’s going to put a strain on both ends. Because she’s not really in a place where she can tell everyone at Speckulate she’s dating a co-worker. Josh got fired for that very reason, for making advances on women there. But also, she does like him, so it’s a hard thing. We’ll definitely explore that throughout this season,” Cierra added about whether her work or relationship would suffer more.

And as for her boss Evan developing feelings, Cierra dished about Mariana’s feelings for him.

“I think she just really respects him. Not a lot of people understand Evan or get him, and I think that he was drawn to Mariana because she really understood him, and she really appreciates him taking interest in her app and wanting to help her. Again, that can get a little messy if someone starts to get feelings,” she said.

The new season premieres in less than two weeks and we are getting some scoop on what’s going down with everyone’s relationships.

As for Dennis and Davia’s burgeoning relationship, Josh Pence dished, “We definitely start to expand into this relationship between Dennis and Davia,” while Emma Hunton said that an “an interesting dynamic” between the two unfolds.

Tommy Martinez shared that we’ll start to get see more of Gael’s personal life. “You see more of a personal side to Gael, rather than just a relationship with him and Callie,” he said.

Sherry Cola, who plays Alice, deals with coming out to her parents. “Now that she’s out, there’s still going to be a lot of other dilemmas, in terms of who she is,” she said. “She’s still kind of discovering that.”

'The Bold Type' Stars Want The Show To Crossover with 'Good Trouble'

'The Bold Type' Stars Want The Show To Crossover with 'Good Trouble'

If there were any two shows we’d want to do a crossover on Freeform, it’d be The Bold Type and Good Trouble – and The Bold Type cast is in!

Speaking with TV Guide, Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee and Meghann Fahy opened up about their ideas on how the series’s could pull it off on the network.

“I’ve been watching Good Trouble [...] every week, and Callie (Maia Mitchell) now is in a weird place with her job. She could come and work for Scarlet‘s [legal department], which then crosses over. I’m sure that Scarlet has to have an L.A. office. Every magazine has another office,” Katie shared her idea.

“So we all like take a trip out to the L.A. office [and] meet with them. We’d have dinner at the Coterie and then Jane’s like, man, ‘I think I should live here.’ And then they just exist in the same world,” she added. “I feel like Kat and Gael can talk about bisexuality and queerness and [Kat] can help Alice, who’s also queer.”

Another show that they’d love a crossover with? grown-ish!
