Thomas spoke to Teen Vogue recently about the movie, revealing he was feeling quite intimidated on set.
“Honestly, the most challenging part was telling all these amazing dancers they were bad and shouting at them. I felt so weird,†Thomas shared. “I trained in contemporary and ballet, but not at this level. These people are pros.”
The 24-year-old actor recently opened up to Teen Vogue about his upcoming role in High Strung Free Dance.
In the movie, Thomas plays Zander, a “dazzling young choreographer†who works with dancer Barlow (played by Juliet Doherty — who isn’t related to Thomas) and pianist Charlie (Harry Jarvis) on Broadway’s highly anticipated musical, Free Dance.
Thomas revealed that he originally auditioned to play Charlie before he landed the role of Zander, who Thomas describes as “an egotistical madman.â€
“I wasn’t right for Charlie but I was right for Zander,†he said, before explaining that Zander is very different from the “boy-next-door kind of characters” he’s played in the past.
“Zander’s quite a complex character,†Thomas said. “He’s nothing like me. I’m quite a chill, laid-back person, but he’s focused, on, and very ambitious. He’s passionate about his dancing and choreographing.”
High Strung Free Dance is a sequel to 2016’s High Strung and is set to hit theaters October 11th.

Juliet Doherty is spilling all the details on her make out session with co-star Thomas Doherty in their new movie, High Strung: Free Dance.
In her new cover story with Dance Spirit, the 21-year-old dancer opens up about the flick, and working with the cast, which she says is “filled with so many talented people.”
Juliet adds, “Some of the dancers were only 16 years old, and they were already so fully expressed. It was the most inspiring set to be on every day, because we were all constantly dancing and moving and singing.”
In the flick, Juliet and Thomas (who aren’t related!) have a make out session, and she also shares a kiss or two with co-star Harry Jarvis.
“Barlow auditions for a Broadway show, and the choreographer, Zander, takes an interest in her,” she explains of the film. “There’s also Charlie, the ‘nice guy’ Barlow really likes—but she’s mesmerized by this charismatic choreographer. Anyway, I kiss both of them.”
“I was so nervous because I’d never kissed anyone on camera!” Juliet admits. “During one scene with Thomas, they let us keep kissing for a full minute. I think in both our minds we were like, ‘Are they gonna call cut sometime soon?!’ But you just keep going until they do.”
High Strung: Free Dance doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s coming soon!
