Neil Patrick Harris Says Goodbye to A Series of Unfortunate Event's Count Olaf

Neil Patrick Harris Says Goodbye to A Series of Unfortunate Event's Count Olaf

A Series of Unfortunate Events is ending after season three, and star Neil Patrick Harris is saying goodbye to his character.

The 44-year-old actor played Count Olaf in all three seasons of the Netflix show.

“Can’t believe that tomorrow is my last day as Count Olaf. For over two years I’ve gotten to play in the most creative, visual, challenging, fantastical sandbox of my career. I’m super proud, and will miss it greatly,” Neil wrote on Twitter.

Neil previous said that the show was only meant to have three seasons, instead of “hoping that the zeitgeist holds us up for as many seasons as people can stomach.”

Let’s be honest, we all were a little bit bummed when we heard that A Series of Unfortunate Events would only be three seasons.

A little part of us all wanted it to be a little longer, however, star and executive producer Neil Patrick Harris helped us to see that ending the show with three seasons is kind of perfect.

“This is a big, big show. It’s a beast. Every book is two episodes, and every episode is an hour long,” he explained to Digital Spy. “So we’re making a two-hour movie every book, and there’s 13 books. So 26 feature films is essentially what we’re making here.”

He continues, “From the beginning, we wanted to honor the encyclopaedic and brilliant work of [Lemony Snicket author] Daniel Handler – we had no real intention of it doing spin-offs or offshoots. It ends so operatically, and yet [the ending is] so heartfelt, and so grown-up. I don’t know where else anyone would want to go with it.”

Neil adds that three seasons is actually the perfect length for the series.

“I’m proud we’re all doing something that’s actually finite, and a piece of art. It’s something that you can put on a bookshelf and appreciate for what it is, not just year after year hoping that people are still interested.”

“I would hate to make it seem as if I’m ready to be done with the show, which isn’t the case at all,” Neil added in another interview. “…The last book of the series is called ‘The End.’ And it ends appropriately. So I’m glad when it will all be done because it will exist.”

A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes, is streaming now on Netflix.
